Superb storytelling and a panoramic view of history recommend this novel to most sf collections.
This novel is more intelligent than either of those movies, having some minor simple crypto games, and realistic, if brief, scientific investigator techniques and equipment explained. In the Night Garden by Catherynne M. Second haldemah, the writing is great. As their parallel trajectories through modern history bring them to the near-future that is the story’s present day, they converge on the experiments in Fiji.

It impulsively adopts the form of ‘Jimmy’, an unfortunate young man out for a late run, who welcomes the still shark-minded visitor to life on dry land and dies horribly. Eventually, after living on our home haldejan long enough, it becomes apparent that their memory is not as camokflage lasting as their lives, and they begin to question where they came from.

I can see Camouflage making a decent movie. As always, Haldeman delivers a pacy, interesting and thoughtful story.
Meanwhile, we learn, there are two aliens roaming the Earth, neither aware of the other but alert to the possibility that there may be another. Where the changeling’s changability is described in the context of its species’ evolution, for all we know the chameleon just alters its form by magic. Haldeman, of course, puts his own riffs on it – basically, he brings in much more science, and much more of the military, and makes it into a love story as well.
The changeling has eidetic memoryso these tasks are easy; human psychology baffles it. We also get hzldeman of thriller action as the story converges in American Samoa, where scientists have raised the alien artifact and are trying their damnedest to break through the impossibly hard exterior.
As Rae approaches the artifact, which she now recognizes as her spaceship, Jack Halliburton appears in the room, traps them there, and reveals himself as the chameleon. The author focuses most of the book on the “good,” which I found a nice choice, and it I willingly followed along as the creature became more and more human, finally learning something akin to love. Sutton, who we are told is well known to be a pushover for attractive women.
Ursula K Le Guin. If gender isn’t the central concern of this novel, it’s near the center, and the handling of it is skillful, subtle, and finely unpredictable.

He could also imitate the appearance of other species but not as easily as the Haldekan. Okay, so it’s a biological imperative, to eliminate competition in the environment, but Haldeman never explains why it hasn’t used its evolved intelligence to camouflafe that imperative.
Soon, the Changeling arrives. I just finished this book and all I can say is that I’m really glad that I happened upon it in a galdeman and bought it.
